2018 planner

Autumn : December 8, 2017 9:47 am : planner, Traveling Crafter

One of the biggest struggles I had with my planner from last year was being able to make up my own sheets and print in the correct size.  Sounds straight forward enough right?  I have an older printer I don’t want to replace because for everything else we do its fine.  So this full size 8.5×11 planner fixes a lot of my issues.  I am committing to this one for a full year.  I got the punch and a heavier weight paper so I could make my own pages to insert.  It also still works with my stand.  What I wasn’t thrilled with is even though this is create 365 and I have that carry bag this is just slightly too large to fit inside and they only make one size.  Also I can already tell I will want the hard cover add on’s.

In general I expect a lot from a planner.  I expect:

Monthly calendar with plenty of room to put important events and appointmentsWeek by week planning for regular practices and to do/goal related items
places for to do lists
space for shopping lists – not the grocery variety – but a place when I use the last of my black thread I can write it down so it can be replaced
I have 2 different blogs I post a few times a week on – this one and my Create Simple Abundance blog so I keep track of what dates I have posted I like to keep track of books in certain series – release dates and books I read over the yearplus ideas to improve my siteswriting ideas etc.

So thinking this full sized version will be like a notebook I can write in and make notes in – aside from the planning aspects.  Here I come 2018.  I have a lot to plan for.

Up-cycled navy top

Autumn : November 14, 2017 10:10 pm : crafts, sewing, Traveling Crafter, Uncategorized, upcycle cloths

I started with a top from good will. I purchased 4 fat quarters of fabric on sale at .99 cents each.  I cut the bottom off the shirt.  I cut the fabric into 4″ strips and then into rectangles.  I wasn’t trying to make them all the exact same size but you could.  I attached each strip of squares to the top.  The first I made a few inches larger than the top measurement then each additional row was a few inches larger than the one before it.

$1 top
$4 fabric

Up-cycled thrift store dress

Autumn : November 11, 2017 9:49 pm : crafts, sewing, Traveling Crafter, upcycle cloths

I started with a dress from good will the top portion fit well but the skirt was unflattering at best. I purchased 2.5 yards of fabric for the skirt with a 60% off one cut which ended up being about $3 a yard.  I cut the bottom off the dress.  I then used a pattern for a flare skirt to get the general size and proportions to cut out the skirt I wanted which was more a line.  I cut out 4 fabric pieces and sewed them together then attached them to the skirt creating the finished dress in a few hours.

$3.50 dress
$7.50 fabric

$11 Total

Interim planner

Autumn : November 8, 2017 9:34 pm : planner, Traveling Crafter

Spiral bound planner

I was struggling with finding a weekly format I liked in an easy to print format for my other planner.  I saw this on clearance and thought what a great idea.  Good for 18 months loved the full month then week to week format.  We were going through a tough illness with my daughter they initially couldn’t diagnose (all better now after surgery) so the doctors were sending us to specialists all over.  There were days I have 4 different appts.  I needed a week to week format and in hindsight that works better for me overall.

I picked up this stand used to hold paper when you type but it was inexpenive and works great to hold my planner upright and visible on my craft table.

I tend to set annual business and personal goals with a list of to do items that works on a weekly format.

What I don’t like is the spiral binding always seems to be in my way when I am trying to write and I can’t move anything around…. I’ll use this for the rest of this year but on to a new style for next year.  Maybe I have the planner version of ADHD.

Studio Calico’s Hello Forever Planner review

Autumn : November 6, 2017 9:11 pm : planner, review, Traveling Crafter

plannerStudio Calico’s Hello Forever Planner

I gave this planner a solid 6 month trial.  It is now relinquished to some goal tracking and project tracking.  I probably could have kept trying new things to get it to work but since it has a function now it’s time to move on.  I will say I am picky when it comes to my calendars and planners – they need to be fully functional with minimal stuff I find useless.

Taking an idea from work I am using Sads and Glads in my review.

Easy to punch holes and move contents
Got to organize some full year items like the timing of my blog posts
Worked great to keep track of my knitting projects
Monthly calendar had adequate boxes for writing
Good size

It took me a lot of time to figure out this was an A5 size not A4
Harder to print out free printable downloads in the correct size
I needed a weekly format but most things on etsy are A4 size which is too small – which I found out when I ordered A4 size
No place for business cards and I couldn’t find anything that fit that wasn’t bulky and awkward

Overall this would be a 3.5 Star review from me.  Could have been better could have been worse.

Sewing – new machine

Autumn : October 13, 2017 5:32 pm : sewing, Traveling Crafter

Been thinking about this a few years but I purchased a new sewing machine.  I had an old Kenmore machine that was at least 40 yrs old.  While it worked I frequently struggled with the tension to the point where I didn’t sew much anymore.   I was out friday with my daughter and caught a sale on this machine and decided it was time.  I kept my old machine but excited to give this one a try. I have some fun sewing ideas to up-cycle cloths.   #travelingcrafter #sewing

Jewelry Project – wire wrapped crystal

Autumn : March 7, 2017 6:36 pm : jewelry making, Traveling Crafter

wire wrapI had never made a wire wrapped crystal but I wanted to give it a try. I found a few good basic videos on Utube and I admit it took several attempts where my wire broke off but I am happy with the results.  I had the plyers I needed and a few crystals so I just needed some wire which was easily picked up at Michael’s.

I originally really liked my clip and spin type unit for my embellishments but as I used and put new stuff away I wasn’t as good at keeping the categories in place so it got harder to find what I needed. I wanted something different so I am trying something new.  I got some plastic bins and used card-stock to create categories.

piping plover shawl   img_2269piping plover img_2001

I signed up for a 6 month kit of the month club – all single skein projects from A Great Yarn in Chatham, MA – what a great idea.  After all the time and effort on the Heavenly sweater which I often referred to affectionately as “the sweater from hell” I was ready for some smaller scale projects.  I ended up wearing it to a local opera I went to see for my anniversary.  Ok I admit it was a Star Trek parody opera called “Abduction from the Seraglio” but it was a lot of fun.  Each month has Cape Cod inspiration this months was the Piping Plover.  #travelingcrafter #knittingaddict #AGreatYarn

Wow this has been a tough pattern but I have learned a lot in the process.  I had never done short rows but I am more confident now trying them again thanks to Katherine at A Great Yarn!   I have it all put together now.  Last pieces left are the front bands – I just completed one side, now on to the next.  Really happy with the way it is coming out. #travelingcrafter

Knitting Project – cardigan sweater

Autumn : September 23, 2016 10:04 pm : knitting, Traveling Crafter

Making progress slowly but surely.  I have one sleeve finished and I have the ribbing completed on the 2nd sleeve.  I don’t have a lot of time for my crafts but I try to make the most of my time.  I just need a few dedicated hours to finish the other sleeve.  Then I am down to the other front panel with short rows going in the opposite direction (so I might need help) and the neck and front panels which also have short rows.  Guess I’ll be proficient in them when this sweater is done.  #travelingcrafter

Trip Journal – 2nd Travel journal

Autumn : July 25, 2016 7:51 pm : journals, mini books, Traveling Crafter

IMG_0096IMG_0152 IMG_0151  IMG_0150

I started with an old book and had the binding cut off at staples.  I took the original hardcover book cover and removed the cloth cover to adhere it to a piece of card-stock, there was no way to punch though a hard cover to use it as the travel journal cover.  Inside I used a combination of book pages, lined journal pages (I stamped and labeled one for each day)  and project life cards.  I then had it spiral bound at Staples.  Simple but fun. #travelingcrafter

Trip Journal – Video Walk-through

Autumn : July 22, 2016 7:49 pm : journals, mini books, Traveling Crafter

Knitting Project – cardigan sweater

Autumn : June 20, 2016 7:30 pm : knitting, Traveling Crafter

I really liked this sweater pattern and even though I am a decent knitter this had some stitches and abbreviations I have struggled with, u-tube video’d and even done some one on one instruction at a knitting store.  I still think it will be worth the effort and I now know how to do short rows which are apparently all the rage in current knitting patterns. This is the front left side.  I have the back completed.  (no short rows in that lol) so making progress.  I usually have several projects going at once so I can work on whatever I am in the mood for. #travelingcrafter

Knitting Project – scarf

Autumn : June 6, 2016 8:18 am : knitting, Traveling Crafter

Love the completed project – of course I wont be wearing it till fall but I am really happy with how it turned out.  I tend to stick to certain darker colors so this color scheme was a bit out of my comfort zone but I am glad I tried something new.   Scarves are fun because they are easy to complete in a shorter time frame. #travelingcrafter

Trip Journal – adding stamped dates

Autumn : June 2, 2016 9:19 pm : journals, mini books, Traveling Crafter

Taking my travel journal step by step.  I like to do things in layers.  In this case I wanted a journal sheet stamped with a date for each day of my trip.  I picked this stamp and stamped each page then wrote in the number for each date in the box.  I added the little vacation notation under the date.  I also am planning to add some project life cards into the book. I will washi tape them in place on a temporary basis before I have the book spiral bound at staples. #travelingcrafter

Trip Journal – adding journaling pages

Autumn : May 16, 2016 9:06 pm : journals, mini books, Traveling Crafter

Next step in creating my trip journal was to add some journaling pages.  I bought a lined book at Michaels with a hard cover for $1.  I opened to where the pages were stitched together, cut the stitching and pulled out a section.  I then cut the very edge to separate the pages to make individual sheets.  I had tried to come up with a variety of options to add lined pages to my travel journal.  I had debated using cardstock or 4×6 project life journal cards but I was trying to avoid adding bulk to the book since I knew later I would be adding photos.#travelingcrafter

Trip Journal

Autumn : March 31, 2016 8:27 pm : journals, mini books, Traveling Crafter

This summer we are planning a big once in a lifetime trip and I am creating a travel journal for myself and my daughter.  This one is mine.  I am following in the footsteps of my all time favorite heroine (fictional) named Ayla from Clan of the Cavebear.  I will be visiting sites featured in that book.  The book is set in prehistoric times so I thought this book on stone age hunters was a perfect way to start.  So I got the book used for a couple of dollars at the Book Barn and then had the binding cut off at Staples.  Once complete I will have it spiral bound by staples.  Already confirmed they can punch varying weight card-stock etc.
